Hotels report no major structural damage in Puerto Rico earthquake

Hotels in several Puerto Rican cities reported no structural damage or injuries after a moderate earthquake struck the Caribbean island, which is a U.S. territory, on early Sunday.

The 5.7-magnitude earthquake was centered about 4 miles (6 kilometers) east-northeast of Espino, or 63 miles (101 kilometers) west-northwest of the capital San Juan. It struck about 68.4 miles (110 kilometers) deep, making it a fairly deep earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially measured the strength of the earthquake as 5.8, but later revised it.

NBC News reported that hotels reached in Mayaguez, Aguadilla, Anasco and San Sebastian said they had no structural damage or injuries from the earthquake.

Thousands of people from the surrounding area near the epicenter reported feeling the earthquake, even as far as the Dominican Republic. “Sat right up in bed in Levittown, felt like I was back in San Diego,” Frank told WireUpdate.com. Others said that power had gone out in cities such as San Antonio and Aguidillo – but it was apparently quickly restored.

There were also unconfirmed reports of landslides.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, and there was no threat of a tsunami.

Earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.7 or higher are rare in this region.
